THE ANATOMY OF A SCREENPLAY

Before you get started, we take a dive into the underlying structure of all screenplays.

In the prework, you’re going to:

  • Learn the underlying structure of ALL screenplays
  • Identify the genre, mood and tone of the story you want to tell

WEEK ONE

FOUNDATIONS: CHARACTER

To get started we're going to focus on WHO your script is about.  Even if you have a more "plot driven" film, it's not to going to be great unless the characters are three dimensional and believable.

In week one, you’re going to learn:

  • why unforgettable characters are the key to any good script
  • a simple method to develop characters that come alive
  • what to focus on when developing characters - and how understanding this will shape your story
WEEK TWO

FOUNDATIONS: STORY

Now we know WHO your script is about, we want to know WHAT happens in it.

In week two, you’re going to learn:

  • how to outline effectively
  • what drives your story and how to make sure it's working
  • a simple technique for getting into the mood of your film every time you sit down to work on it
  • how to let the story reveal itself to you - rather than you forcing it

This is the week you're going to start actually writing your screenplay.

In week 3, you’re going to learn:

The second act is notoriously the hardest nut to crack when writing a screenplay, but this session will keep you on track.
